Meet the Team - Biothane, Netherlands

What are your main tasks in the project?

The Biothane R&D team works in collaboration with Covestro and the TU Darmstadt on the case study of energy recovery from chemical industry wastewater. Our primary responsibilities include comprehensive wastewater characterization and analysis of various industrial streams. Using our data and expertise, we advise which waste streams are suited for anaerobic digestion. We conduct detailed biodegradability studies to assess methane production potential and run continuous laboratory trials to evaluate long-term effects on anaerobic biomass, providing crucial insights into treatment feasibility.

What are your goals?

As Veolia's center for anaerobic technology, we aim to expand the application of sustainable wastewater treatment solutions, building on our legacy of over 700 successful projects worldwide. We focus on developing innovative, modular, and customized anaerobic technologies that maximize energy recovery and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emmissions, in allignment with Veolia’s mission of 'Resourcing the World’.

What is your motivation and what excites you the most about your work?

What truly excites us is that by using natural bacterial processes we can prevent waste. Anaerobic bacteria can be found in the nature around you. These same bacteria are our workhorse for the treatment of industrial wastewater. It's remarkable how small bacteria can make such a significant environmental impact. We're driven by the opportunity to create sustainable solutions for industrial challenges. Our passion lies in contributing to environmental protection by promoting biogas production over incineration, thereby reducing emissions and pollution.

Which impact do you think your research/work will have on the future?

Our research aims to establish anaerobic systems as a standard treatment method in the chemical industry. By providing comprehensive feedback and realistic feasibility assessments, we're working to transform industrial wastewater treatment, making it more sustainable and energy-efficient for future generations.
