Meet the Team - Aalborg University, Denmark

 
What are your main tasks in the project?

At Aalborg University (AAU), we coordinate CORNERSTONE, ensuring project management. We also have a technical role in developing membrane distillation and membrane crystallization, which is tested for water, energy and solute recovery in the steel and pulp and paper industry (WP1). Additionally, AAU is also leading the work package pilot-scale demonstration of the CORNERSTONE systems in the steel, pulp and paper and chemical industry (WP3). AAU also contributes to digital optimization, smart monitoring, and industrial-scale validation across multiple work packages.

 

What are your goals?

Our main goal is to successfully demonstrate and optimize the CORNERSTONE water treatment solutions at an industrial scale. We will mature the membrane distillation and membrane crystallization technologies, targeting the steel and pulp and paper industry.  Through WP3, we aim to integrate advanced separation technologies and digital twins to enhance water, energy and solute recovery and sustainability in industrial water management. Additionally, as project coordinators in WP7, we are committed to ensuring the efficient execution of CORNERSTONE, fostering collaboration across partners, and facilitating knowledge transfer that maximizes the impact of our research.

 

What is your motivation and what excites you the most about your work?

At AAU, we are passionate about developing practical and scalable solutions that contribute to sustainable industrial water management. The most exciting aspect of our work is the opportunity to bridge cutting-edge research with real-world industrial applications, ensuring that innovative water recovery solutions are not just theoretical but implemented and tested at pilot scale. Additionally, leading the project coordination gives us the unique chance to shape international collaborations and drive strategic decision-making that enhances the project’s impact.

 

Which impact do you think your research/work will have on the future?

By demonstrating integrated water treatment solutions at an industrial level, AAU’s work in CORNERSTONE will help industries reduce freshwater dependency, optimize energy use, and recover valuable resources, directly contributing to the European Union’s climate and sustainability goals.
